Personal injury lawyers confront tragedy on a daily basis but are often left in awe of the courage displayed by severely injured accident victims. That was certainly so in one case concerning a young man who fought his way back to independence after suffering life-changing head injuries in a road smash.
The man, aged in his 20s, was a passenger in a car which was rammed from behind by a bus. Three of his friends died in the collision and he was so severely injured that it was at first thought that he would always be dependent on the care of others. With the support of his family, however, he has managed to return to work since the accident and plans to move into a home of his own.
Following negotiations, the bus driver's employers agreed to settle his claim for £1,454,687. In approving the settlement, the High Court paid tribute to the remarkable progress he had made. His independence had been achieved by his own grit and determination to get back to where he was before the accident.
